Okay they aren't SHUTTING DOWN, but the Space Shuttle program is indeed ending in 2010, and NASA will be cutting ~8,000 jobs, and at some facilities almost 90 percent of the employees.

There is a replacement for the shuttle planned, the "Constellation", but it won't begin until 2015. I wonder why the 5 year gap? I think ending the shuttle program for 5 years will be seen as abandoning the space program.

From my experience there are 3 types of people in regards to space exploration:

1. We don't belong in space "If God wanted us to fly he would have given us wings"

2. Exploring space is absolutely necessary, both for the spirit of humanity and to expand the human civilization to other plants (Mars, etc).

3. It doesn't really matter because humans are not capable of advancing enough to escape the solar system before our sun turns into a Red Giant...we are all doomed anyway even if we colonize mars (granted this wont happen for a long long time, but it WILL happen).
