How do I manually set my connection in Renegade? [message #189067]

Apparently it thinks I have a 56k Modem, when I have a ~7 mbps Cable Broadband internet, scoring me a ping of 5 in games such a Counter Strike Source. When playing Renegade, it is hardly playable with the lag. Is there some way I can bypass the horrible "Bandwidth Detection"? Or set my own network settings?
