Avi is the container, Fraps uses it's own useless codec. Useless in the sense that files are 23542465435 times as large as they need to be when you use xvid or X264. I'd recommend converting them with mediacoder.

I recommend using the h264 codec. You can find plenty of encoders on google for it.

Yeah, Fraps will only record to uncompressed avi, you need to compress it, Youtube will support a vast amount of file types.

A list of the valid file types it can upload:

  • .avi
  • .mkv
  • .mov
  • .mp4
  • .flv
  • .wmv
  • .mpeg
  • .3gp
  • DivX
  • .ogg
  • .ogv

I'd say the easiest thing to do is to import the video into Windows Live Movie Maker (Although it might not be the best video editor, it works still) and use the "publish on youtube" feature it has, that is if the file isn't too big.

fraps @ 30fps (half size, .avi) -> winavi (.wmv, compressed even at 100% quality will split the file size in half) -> youtube
