Ok, my budget has no limit and we already expect to spend upto 2000-3000 GBP but that might rise still.

We still yet to decide on the CPU, but I prefer AMD CPU's over Intels, am waiting on the Phenom II to be released, but I am looking at Intels i7 through.

Going to overclock the CPU.

Machine is going to have to have two ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 2 GB video cards installed in Quad CrossfireX.

Need a full tower for sure which needs to be awesome at cooling, PC might be water/liquid/fan cooling.

Other then these few things, not sure on everything else, but PSU needs to be around 1000watt since the video cards are very power hungry.

Motherboard needs to have aleast 2 PCI-E v2 x16 slots (must due to the video cards) and a other PCI-E v2 slot for a sound card, but more the better to be honest, also one or two PCI v2 slots would be handy, motherboard needs to be well layed out due to the crazy size of the video cards, we talking about 9-12 inchs long.

Will do a raid 0 setup to use as the gaming drive.

Any ideas?

Never built a proper PC before, so got a few of these topics all over the place, the aim is to build a gaming PC that will blow the crap out of everything else out there.

If you truely have no budget then I could turn that into like £6k lmao.

Anyways just want to point out a few things before I update this in the morning as its nearly 2am.

CPU: Intel C2Q 45nm Q9550 Overclocks VERY well and you'll get the same performance from it as if it was a £600 CPU

GFX: XFX GTX280 XXX This card is the card to get and if you run it in SLI then even better but I dont really see the point

Case: Coolermaster RC1100 V2.0] This case is HUGE. It comes with 3x120mm and a single 200mm Fan. It even has a Hexus report.

I will add other things in the morning.

the only thing i can point out is that ati cards are as good if not better than nvidia cards, and they are alot cheaper than nvidia cards. i would suggest for you to go with intel cpu, probably the one that caveman suggested.
but for video cards stick with 4870, i got one and i love it...

had an envidia 8800gt a year ago and it was garbage.

I think this Techspot guide will give you a good place to start. The recommendations they make are excellent, and they also provide a good place to start off from.

Yeah, am sticking with the two 4870 X2's as they are the most powerful cards on the market todate.

I'm gonna be honest with you: much of that power will go unused.

A 4870X2, or GTX 280 will be more than sufficient for your current, and future needs. Just because your budget is large, doesn't mean you have to go overboard. Mr. Green

Go with the Intel Core i7 @ 2.66. Cheapest of the new batch, and with proper cooling, you can overclock the crap out of it.

Of course, with that, you will need a new mobo that supports the LGA 1366 socket type for the i7.

Then you'll need some DDR3 RAM (running at a voltage less than 1.65 V), in sets of 3 for that processor.

Lol, I just looked all this stuff up the other day. Anyway, basically, if you're going to put that much money into a PC, you might as well go all out and build for the future so that you won't have to upgrade for years, and so that you will be prepared for when the software finally supports the new hardware technology.

Decide whether you want to go Intel or AMD. I did some research for the Intel i7, and picked out some parts that would go well together, as a sort of fantasy wish list for myself. Here they are:

-Processor
-Mobo
-RAM
-Then get yourself a badass gfx card (or 2 of em, why not). In terms of power and performance, I've currently got a Nvidia 9800 GTX+, and I have not yet found a game (cept Crysis, which is poopy anyway) that I can't run on full 1680x1050 res, full detail, at least 4xAA with over 30-40 fps. Therefore, a GTX 280 would EPICLY RAPE games, but as others have mentioned the ATI 4870 might also do the trick.
-Find yourself a 64 bit OS to support all that RAM.
-You could mess with RAID, or just go buy a 1.5 TB hdd, they're cheap enough.
-And the case. I got myself a full tower ATX, this one, and despite the price, I couldn't be happier. It's huge, it's solid, it's got 5 fans, and is relatively easy to get hardware into.
-And with all this hardware, find yourself a huge power supply. You might not need it, but to be on the safe side, 750 watt or higher.
-Cooling may be an issue, like I said, I've got 5 fans, and my CPU is idling at 30 C. Liquid cooling is a good option since you plan on overclocking. If I liquid cooled, I could idle at less than 20 C.

That's about it. Have fun building. Like I said, plan for the future, since you plan on spending the money.

Also, I know I linked to Newegg, and I dunno what their deal with shipping to UK is, but those parts are just examples that I'm sure you could find elsewhere.

Since money isn't an issue obviously, getting two 4870x2s will be a good idea.
A Core i7 will be good
I recommend at least 6GB of RAM (and in triple channel of course)

What you want is a big display to go with the GPUs. At least a full HD resolution one, but 2560x1600 would be better obviously. Razz

There doesn't seem to be a real good motherboard out there, they always have something good but there be something really crap about them.

Like lots of PCI-E v2 ports but too close together to each other blocking other ports or blocking sockets on the other side when you fit a large video card on them.

I did folding once, my PC crashed a few times, wasn't sure if that was the cause, but I suspect it was, so never tired again.

Yes, gonna need a large HD monitor. Thumbs Up

I think Iron is aiming to do what I did, spend about £100 pounds more than is really needed, and then not have to upgrade for a few years. I mean years.

Yeah you're right there however you really only gain a huge boost when playing at 2,560x1,600. Otherwise the X2 is only 10-20% faster then the SINGLE XFX 280 XXX. God help ATi if nvidia choose to release a 280X2.

Even then the 4870x2 would still be faster as it takes 2-3 nvidias to keep up with one single 4870x2

You're not reading what I have said. Only when you play games at 2,560x1,600 do you actually gain any real performance increase from having another card. If you're playing at a modest 1600x1200 the extra card only gives you 10FPS more over a SINGLE XFX260. ATi's card is good at number crushing due to the high frequencies. However, when it comes down to 3D applications I.E. gaming, you don't really gain much.

If you don't believe look on hexus.net and read the reviews.

Yes I understand.

The aim is to build the best gaming PC you can build right now, the video cards are the best right now, whatever the resolution needed.

Also the drivers for ATI at the moment are not fully erm to say, complete, so when they get updated, the card should work better.

If I had a real choice, I would go with Nvidia, I feel safe with them, but choice is made.

Am sure in time, there be newer cards coming out as always, but that is life.

I would go with the new core i7. They overclock pretty well. Since you have a massive budget why not get an i7 and watercool the cpu and your 2 gpus.

Anyways with your budget I wouldn't hold your breath for AMD but you can.

Get an i7 that supports SLI/CF that way you always have room to play with.
6gb of tri channel ddr3 is more than enough ram.
Get some hard drives running in raid - you could go SSD but I haven't seen much that would make the extra money worth it.
The 4870x2 is a better card imo and the price tag isn't much different. Always consider the warranty on the products.

As for a case if you're looking for airflow just browse around for ones with lots of fans especially on the front and top.

Power supply = Corsair 1000HX HANDS DOWN.

I'd also go watercooling if you plan to do some heavy overclocking. The i7s run fairly hot so if you want to push it that'd be the way to go. Personally what I would do is read reviews and comparisons of all of the parts you're considering. Everyone here will have their favourites, read a neutral review and see how they perform on games you want to play.

That's no larger than an 8800 (as far as I can tell from the pictures) and people fit two of those in their cases NP.

it is larger than 8800gt thats for sure, i had the 8800 before and it was a piece of garbage, so i bought a 4870 to replace it after the replacement for my 8800 from evga turned up bad aswell.

in any case the 4870 was about 3/4 of an inch longer and about 1/2 inch wider.

so even if you do manage to fit in into a mid tower case the second one would definitely not get adequate airflow through it and thats provided you can even fit the second one.

correct me if im wrong but the 4870x2 is essentially two cards in one, so there is basically no chance you can fit two of those into a mid size tower... well atleast not without doing some messing around with the card or the tower. by mid tower i mean something around the size of sonata 3 http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129024
