Ok so I wrote a big long post and the forum decided to error when I tried to post it and I lost it. In short my HD is dying and I need a way to direct copy it to another HD without having to reinstall everything. I've only been using this HD for 3 months and it has started to show signs that it is going to die. I really dont want to go through that hassle again so soon of reinstalling everything. So do you guys know of any programs that could do this? Preferably from a bootable CD.

then you're a moron because ghost is probably one of the best and most effective image programs. (at least 8.0 and earlier.)

Saying Ghost is bad proves he knows nothing about the product. Not all products from symantec are bad.

But there is definitly better out there. If you want to have more freedom go with Acronis True Image.

The first question for TS is whats your budget? Because Ghost/Acronis normally costs money.

There is free programs/opensourced out there though that will be able to do what you want. Google, if you want to have some of the more pro stuff hyrens *hint* Big Grin

Oh, the irony is just AMAZING. Ever stop to think that you might be the one putting words into someone else's mouth?

He didn't say you thought it was ineffective. He said you're a moron because you're refusing to use a good program because of it being a Norton product.

Right and he called me a moron because he believes Norton is an effective imaging program and because I said not to install, somehow translates into it doesn't work very well.

Alright, enough bickering. I share the sentiment that Symantec makes shoddy software. I will look into Acronis as someone on IRC suggested that as well. Have any of you ever heard of or used DDRescue? Aparantly that is the best and its actually open source however it is too complicated for me to figure out. It's very linuxy. Also if any of you are subscribed to the Newegg newsletter theres a real nice Seagate 750GB HDD for 99$ with free shipping today only.

Look around the net for Hiren's Boot CD. You can boot off it and it has a whole variety of cloning utilities. Actually I would recommend Ghost as your first choice, and Acronis TrueImage as your second.

Do NOT go out and get the new version of Ghost, because they've changed the product to something completely different.

The transfer was a huge success almost entirely due to our good IRC friend Jadame Tamuli. I am fully cloned and repartitioned. Now I need to figure out what to do with a 280 Gig SATA drive of questionable reliability...

if its only 3 months old isnt there a warranty you can claim on it? i mean its of no use to you now, so you could send it back to the manufacturer and not be bothered by the long waiting time.

It was only in my computer for three months. It was in an external drive for like 2 years. Also I don't return things on warranty. I feel bad. I know the company tried their best. Sometimes bad things happen.

Just call the company and tell them it failed, you have a 5 year warranty on it, most likely they will send you a new one without even caring if you ship it back. I called up Western Digital because I had an old 20gb drive that had 10 days left on its 5 year warranty. They sent me a new 160gb drive to replace it; 'nuff said.

Errr, if the company's profit margin is under 20%, then I can see your point. Otherwise, I don't feel bad.

Like I said, it's not a big name HD like a Western Digital. It shows up in Windows and the Bios as "GENERIC DRIVE". It is out of a... What was the name of it... Fantom! External Drive. I'm sure just taking apart voided the warranty. They certainly wouldn't warranty that drive after it has been taken out of the enclosure and used as a desktop drive for a while.

Your warranty is more than likely voided for the external drive, but odds are the manufacturer of the external drive didn't manufacture the hard drive inside - which may still be under warranty. If you can't figure out who made it though, you're kinda S.O.L. You can try to Google the code that comes up for the drive in your BIOS.
