Recently I used the indipendance exploit for my ps2 to make it play snes and nes games since some of my old cartridges dont work anymore, they ran full speed off a USB thumbdrive on my playstation 2, then theres my sister and I who have anime as avi files on DVD (entire series), it's a pain to watch things on a computer with such a small screen, so i found a program called SMS.elf which plays avi files off USB harddrives and dvd's, now besides playing dvd's i am able to play mp3, avi, mpeg, and jpeg on my ps2, beats having a apple TV or laptop connected to the television just to watch something on the big screen, the avi files all played at high quality and full speed with full controls such as fast forward, skip into timeline, stop, pause, play, just like a dvd or playing movies on your PC, I just thought this would be kinda cool to share if you know how to use .elf files on your ps2, that you can play avi files off DVD's
I reccomend using a USB hardrive, it plays full speed for usb 1.0 on the ps2, playing a DVD with avi files is not normally recognized by the ps2's coding, so inserting the disc normally will not make it boot, the only way is to have a modded ps2, or using the swap method, insert a ps2 game into the tray, go into one of the game's folders, then use your swap key or homemade swap key to switch the game for the avi disc, then go back to the root of the disc and it will show the folder containing all your avi/mp3/jpeg files. I might record a video of it in action sometime, so if you wanna try this, i might do it.
heres the link to the .elf file
http://home.casema.nl/eugene_plotnikov/SMS%20Version%202.3%20%28Rev.2%29.elf
YOU CANNOT USE .ELF FILES UNLESS YOU HAVE A ELF LOADER, ELF IS LIKE A EXE FILE FOR A COMPUTER, BUT FOR PS2, I WILL NOT HELP YOU WITH LOADING ELF FILES UNLESS YOU HAVE THE PROGRAM ALREADY AND HAVE BOOTED ELF's BEFORE.
Note, make sure the avi files you are playing, you own, it's illegal to download stuff you dont own, same for the mp3 files.

I prefer harddrive when watching the avi files because it doesnt wear and tear the dvd tray, mine is a bit slower now, but it still runs games/movies full speed.
and why is a normal repaired ps2 better than a working haxz0r ps2 running a whole new operating system which loads .elf files and games/movies.
EDIT:
I forgot to mention using a external DVD usb drive will work better than the ps2's if you dont have a modded ps2, the dvd tray will load the avi files and show as a harddrive since it goes by USB, so if you like playing your avi from a dvd, do this, much easier than swapping.
My new ps2 menu is just like the ps3/psp's but no cool waves in the background.

All i can say is yes, my ps2 is unmodded and still has the warranty, (well technically it expired) but if i did, my warranty would still be ok since they hack doesnt touch the ps2 at all, all i do is code a script that when i insert crash bandicoot warped into the tray, rater than loading the game, it loads the operating system called uLAUNCHELF, from there I can copy, paste, rename, delete, edit text and scripts, and run .elf files, theres tons you can do with this without a modded ps2, I wanted to play old games and avi files soooo bad, I made a way to using the ps2 independence exploit, you find the code of a ps1 game, add boot.elf and make it into a save file using a program that makes action replay/gameshark saves, then you insert the hack save into your memory card slot 1 with gameshark/action replay, reset the ps2, insert the ps1 game you took the code from (any ps1 game you have will work usually) then it loads up something that looks from the 80's and from there, hack away.

WRONG WRONG WRONG, action replay and gameshark loading the hack save with the script inside will make this hack work, the point of this hack to be used in a modless ps2, it will work 100x easier with a modded ps2, but works just fine without a modchip, I even copy my own games and play backups legally, I do not support piracy for ps2/console games unless it was purchased then copied, I am a messy person and leave disc around, so i copy my games once in a while to habe "fresh" disc to help my dvd lense stay healthy, scratches make it work hard. Playing backups though, I will not help, for that all i can say is do google, learn from scratch like i did, it took me around 6 months to get it right, but once i understood it 100% and read guides, it look me 15 minutes to make a working full proof hack.

This isnt PC vs PS2 it's ps2 vs ps2, because a standard ps2 cant do any of this, and not everyone wants to use a media center PC on their TV, so this is like a quickfix rather than buying an appletv or slingbox, if i remember there was a hack to make them play avi files, but heck a machine older can do it at full speed
Yesterday i loaded up my external hard drive with a anime i never finished, so i decided to finish it, lucky me, I forgot and formatted my HDD to ntfs and not fat32! now my ps2 doesnt recognize it and i need to reformat again, i checked my usb thumb drive and it's fat32, so I'm thinking ps2's dont like ntfs formats.

Ah but see, not all tv's have s video cables, plus svideo cables only prodice VIDEO, no sound, meaning you would need to have speakers set up also or have more cables, thats why using the ps2 makes more sense also, it has all the cables needed for basic avi playing, I mean standard cables the ps2 uses wont show anything high def, but if you want to watch dvd quality material, then it works fine, plus once you get it working it is nice, I still havent recorded the video, but I one of these days when I'm not busy I will, maybe tomorrow before i go to work.

Full living proof in the video, full speed AVI off a external USB hard drive at crystal clear quality, the playback, not the video i recorded, the video i recorded got screwed because of photobuckets "compression" which made my video look blurry here and there, but still watchable and text is readable, 2min video, watch all of it, my ps2 can do more so maybe i'll record something else sometime....

Omg stupid photobucket screwed the sound too, it was alot louder, you could hear the sound from the TV......
