hey all,
me and a friend of mine just noticed that there is some sick kind of censorship in cnc3:tw. (at least german version / kane edition)
youre not allowed to give names as your profile name like "hitler", "adolf", "osama", "binladen" and so on! even 'leet'-versions of those names ("h1tler","hitl3r","ad0lf"...) are forbidden (guess its pattern matching stuff?!).
i dont want to say that i like hitler/osama nor i wanna play "as" them. i just hate this kind of censorship and i dont want to get patronised that way!
so thats why i posted it in "politics/hot issues". im very interested in _your_ opinion!

Well, from a business/ethical POV:
-They probably did that to discourage the skinhead who would create such a name.
-The nicks will be offensive to some people...so they were blocked to make them happy.
But IMO, it is really unnecessary.

Not to justify the censoring of these words, because I myself find it a bit overboard and unnecessary, but they have certain standards to meet. If they want their game to be rated T then they have to meet the ESRB standards, which could possibly include the censoring of certain words.

Come to think of it, I actually noticed that back in the demo, me and my friend tried to make the name pussy, twat, etc, and it wouldn't work. Kinda BS is that? MY money paying for MY game, I should be able to play as whatever part of the anatomy I want to be...

So now you want to discriminate against "Skinheads"?
There are are people out there that use the names like Hitler, Osama etc. purely to get a reaction, be that flaming or in their naivety thinking that all players are laughing with them and the bad joke.
Unfortunately that is not usually the case.
As for the "Skinheads", I am sure that as a group they have not infiltrated the game to distibute and promote racial hatred.

Well, EA did the same thing for Need for Speed: Carbon.
It was to have a feature where players can have custom license plates but because EA was afraid it could not control what people would say on it, they slashed that idea.
