if you dont really have any expreriance then you should use it as a secondary os. I dont really recommend switching unless you have any idea what you are doing. Linux is really great and stable but practically, windows is better for everything.

It depends, what do you want to do with your computer? Play games, email, chat, other stuff, set up a webserver. What do you want to do?

I use Windows XP for my website, runs like a charm. Of course, it doesn't use big clunky Apache.

No. Seriously. No.

Why do you want to switch? Is it stability? Freedom? Or just Curiousity? Try to figure out the reason if you don't know yet. Because there are so many distributions (or distros for short) out there for so many uses. Here're some examples: Red Hat, Mandrake, Debian, Gentoo, Slackware, SUSE, and many others. I'd reccomend Mandrake, since it's easy to install and use.

If you have a second computer, try installing a few distros on it. Try to get a general feel for the use of the system. If you don't have a spare computer, you can install a user-friendly distro (Like Mandrake) to co-exist with Windows. But if you do a dual boot install, make sure you back up your data first.

By the way, if you really want to understand the whole thing behind "Linux" (Which is more correctly called GNU/Linux), you have to understand free software and the GNU Project.

Dual boot. It's pretty hard to completely switch over for the first time. Also, try to use the GUI as little as you possibly can. Get comfortable with the CLI.

"Most" web sites are run on "clunky apache". Unless you have some integrated .Net stuff, there is no reason to use IIS along with all its vulnerabilities.

Agreed. I made the mistake of attempting to use IIS for Digital Depiction. It's really more of a pain than anything. APACHE 4 LYFE.

The Problem is, not every game runs on a Linux box and certain proffesional software only runs on Windows. OpenOficce might be a good solution, to Office. But In the End I rather use Office than OpenOffice.

Next to the fact that is a bit harder to fully learn how it all works. Not every program just has an easy setup program. It sometimes just includes having to manually change some settings in a text file.

At this moment I'm running for half a year only on Red Hat 9 Linux on one Pc. The pc it self is a bit dieing. It's my old Renegade pc. P3 450 326 MBRAm. And the Videocard is a voodoo 5500 PCI 64vram. I only use it to surf the web, MSN and as a SSH and FTP server. And some simple c++ and java programming.

Size doesn't matter.

Give something like Knoppix a try before you frag everything.

Dual Boot. Partition your drive, dont just format your drive. btw dont try to install Fedora Core 2 along with winxp..some problems may occur, this didnt happen to me but it happened to other people..you can try Knoppix that will run from a cd or you can get a SuSe 9.2 live cd(dvd) from the Linux Format Magazine issue 61

I think I'm average user. Apache just has the right amount of configuration options needed.

If you are going to wipe out your entire hard drive, make sure you want to do it.

Use Knoppix or another live CD distro first. All you have to do is burn a CD, put in in the PC, restart the computer, and that's it. (Good thinking Lib, why did I think of that?)

By the way, is your friend talking about WINE or TransGaming?

No, half the users that have the internet are oblivious to anything besides "send", "save", "go", "IE", etc.

Here's the link: http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html Make sure you download the .iso file. Burn the file as an "image" with a CD Burner.

Cedega is from TransGaming. Note that Cedega is NOT Free Software or Open Source.
