Changing the RAM and Harddrive doesn't void your warranty - what else are you going to change on a notebook? That's more than enough for 90% of students' needs.

That's a different debate for a different--why it's better to have a good desktop than a laptop. My post was directed at Macs in general, not just notebooks.

-Pages is superior to Word, but I have the feeling I'm arguing with someone who, unlike me, hasn't written term papers with both. Pages simply gives you cleaner layout. I haven't experienced any compatibility issues, either. Keynote is miles ahead of Powerpoint...it's really easy to make a presentation look professional with those templates, Powerpoint doesn't even come close. I'm not an avid Excel/Numbers user, so I can't comment on those two.

Except that people don't use Pages, or Keynote. They use Office, because that's what everyone else uses. No man is an island, and you can make your presentation look real shiny but it won't do your professor any good if he or she can't open it up when you turn it in.
Come to think of it, I doubt your shitty mac equivalents are better. Otherwise, why would more people (Probably more Mac users, too) be using Office?

Macfags can't run Google Chrome, and since Opera started sucking with Opera 10, that's just about the only browser worth running. Don't bother bringing up FailFox. I'd rather not use that RAM-hungry bloated browser, especially if I'm stick with an already-underpowered Apple machine.

Shouldn't these experiences be relevant, though? It's not the OS's fault if you don't know how to use it. Learn to, instead of wasting time complaining about it. If I didn't have any problems with it, maybe you should stop and consider that maybe the problem is with you?

Apple, unlike Microsoft, produces hardware, software, drivers, and firmware. They're made to work together and with nothing else. It's possible to get OSX on a real computer, but it really isn't worth the effort.

Sooooo, a Mac store opened around my neck of the woods, and I figured I'd swing by on my way from school.
I was pleasantly surprised by how much the people knew about the systems as I played around with them. Granted, I'm used to the Best Buy/Future Shop ilk who seem to know the insides of their noses from picking them all day, better than a PC. I'd be comfortable buying a Mac for my folks based on the knowledge of the employees, something I can't say for any other dealer.

Ever go to NCIX? I have a canada computers in my city, they're worlds better than FS/BB. I know more about most stuff than nearly all FS/BB employees. I love how they lie to you, or if you ask a specific question they don't know.

Yeah we do. Ironically, the nearest NCIX is opposite a Future Shop. I've been, and every time, it's packed to the hilt with customers. I guess being next to a FS will do that. 
It's not me that I'm concerned about. It's my parents, and those who don't know their stuff. The last thing I want is them running to BB when their PC kicks the bucket because they'll assume the dude in khaki slacks and blue shirt in the PC section will know his shit about PC's, when in actuality, he wouldn't know a BIOS from a bluescreen. He'd either just tell them to buy something new or refer them to Geek Squad where they'd be charged tons of cash for a defrag and a virus scan that wouldn't fix the underlying issue. He's not going to help them, because he gets his hours based on how much he sells.
Even though I wasn't a paying customer, and the Apple employee knew that, they still answered my questions and helped me figure things out; that's service you don't get too often these days. It wouldn't persuade me to buy an Apple for myself, but for people like my parents, the Apple Store would be a godsend if something bad happens.

Most people in electronic stores nowadays are sellers, not technicians. If you go to your local computer nerd store, you'll get someone who knows his shit. You also might pay a bit more (though that's not sure at all).
