I also really enjoy Java and it's a much easier platform to learn concepts like multithreading, sockets, the like prior to learning them in a C language.

I completely agree with you there!

Java was the first real programming language I learnt and the strict structure it imposes on your code is, in my opinion, a great starting point for object oriented coding in other languages such as C++.

If you want to start with a language designed for teaching, there's always Pascal, which is what I learnt first. Can't give any advice on books for C++ though.

It would certainly help. Let me do a degree Audit to see what Bradley requires as far as math for CS majors. It might even be as much as us EEs are required to take.

Yep, you will likely need to go all the way through Calculus 3. Looks like you probably wont have to take Differential Equations though. The better your foundation in math is the better time you will have in a technical degree. In my case I took something called AP Calculus in high school which allowed me to take a specialized test at the end of the year and receive college credit. This allowed me to enter as a freshman in Calculus 2. That might be something to look into if you really want to go this route. If you only take two years of math in high school you will likely still be able to get into the CS major but you will have a lot of work ahead of you trying not only to pass all the math classes you need to catch up but staying "on sequence" in your major without requisite math skills. It really hurt me last semester because I took Differential Equations "off sequence" and so in my Signals and Systems Analysis course I had to just teach myself how to do the required differential equations used in certain cases since the course assumes you have already taken it. It is much easier to have taken the courses already than have to teach yourself them for use in other courses!

You need to take something like a "Precalculus and Trigonometry" course before you take Calculus. I'm not sure what your school offers but as an example this is what I took in high school.

Geometry > Advanced Algebra and Trig > Precalculus and Trig > AP Calculus

Math IS hard so that's not a reason to think you can't do it or that you shouldn't try. Math is quite literally the language of existence. Everything is math: Art, Science, Business, Engineering...

The way I see it is, in some games you have stats that you can increase to become better at a specific thing. Sometimes there is a talent or a perk or something that makes you a little better at everything. That perk is math.

I dont know if this is your school or not but I thought I might be able to find the course list for your high school online. I know you live in Riverdale so I figured Riverdale High School was a good bet. The student handbook is pretty funny.

http://www.riverdale.k12.ca.us/schools/riverdalehs/fil_files/56.pdf

No beards, no dyed hair, and you can't wear many teams athletic apparel due to gang affiliation? They seem like such random choices too. I didn't know there was a gang affiliated with University of Michigan or the Cleveland Browns. Razz

Also I am suprised to see that holding hands is acceptable as that was totally not Ok at my highschool despite all the other things above being ok.

Also they have to buy a card to be able to participate in after school activities or athletics? Insanity.

Anyhow I'm guessing that isn't your high school SSnipe since that handbook states a required 3 years of math and you said you only need 2. Still a funny read though.

Ah riverside, I knew it was something similar to that. Did you find anywhere on that site that says what math classes are offered?

looks like they are split up more than my high school. Ideally you would get through Calculus before graduation but even getting through trigonometry would be helpful.

Im not sure if I can skip past it but after my geometry is done there NO MORE room left fro my transcript which means i only need 2 years of math so after that im guessing I can choose the next math class on my own?
