I am afraid it is ridiculous to say “No matter how much money�.
Clearly if an extremely wealthy entity wanted to they could simply buy EA (it’s a publicly traded company). At that point they would own all of EA’s intellectual property.
Additionally at a more sensible level its only money, businesses exist to make money, if EA thought it was in their interests to sell the source for Renegade (i.e. they got a big enough check) they would.
Additionally what legal issues are you talking about, the only cases I can think of is if they purchased rights from a third party or worse stole code from someone.
In either case enough money would solve both problems (read: payoff).
