You're using a pre-made skin, show some dedication and make your own.
Forums are boring there's no way forums can have the funcationality of a website, they're meant for interaction and discussion not spamming to upgrade your stupid RPG characters.

However I totally agree with you about not needing a .com. In the past the CNC Community was hosted mainly on subdomains and it was very popular. However, nowadays .coms are only £6/year (less than 2 hours work @ min. wage) so while they aren't required they do show that you are prepared to spend money on your site (and therefore you are dedicated to it).

I have 2 rules about forums:
1. Using the default skin = cya
2. RPG add-on = cya.
