Oil may not be such a massive problem for transportation as it seems- alternative fuels that can use similar/the same engines are already a possibility.

Certain alcohols can be used in most of the cars on the road today...that is, if you convert a few of the hoses to different materials(metal tubing rather than rubber hoses). Much cleaner, more efficient energy, and easy to produce- anyone and their mother in law can make moonshine. Wink

Hydrogen, also, could be used, with a few alterations in car design- either in fuel cells or internal combustion. That has the added bonus of being storable in much greater quantities and in much smaller tanks, since it is in gas form. The big problem with that is you need electricity to separate water molecules, since water is pretty much our only source of hydrogen.
