you reckon it could be to do with firewalls?

What firewall(s) are you using?
Like Crimson said you only get this white screen 'crash/hang' if the RG cant connect to the RenGuard network. Maybe your settings in the firewall are wrong or you could try reinstall the firewall?

If you added the program to firewall as 'allowed' it should not have any problems.

Maybe, your firewall is still set to the old game.exe and finds your NEW game.exe (renguard modified) has changed and disallows it to connect to the internet. That would be a logic explaination. Only i think your FW wudve popped up a message about this 'changed program' behaviour. In case it didnt you could review the logs of FW and see if it does in fact block the connection.

The problem is in your FW settings most likely ;/
