Roleplaying is essintally trying to act as if you're the character you're playing as.

Like say, you're a soldier back in the times of castles and all, you probally wouldn't know a darned thing about laser cannons, plasma rifles, orbital cannons, etc, so maybe normally you'd say

"Cool! Which game is that in?"
but when roleplaying you may say something like
"What is this gibberish you be talking about!? Is it black magic!? I'll be having none of that here!"

or another example: Normally if you see a kid on the street that's lost and you're a nice person, you may try to help the kid. If you're roleplaying an evil guy who likes to blow things up and sets things on fire, you'll probally want/need to pull out a flamethrower or grenade launcher instead.
