I just checked, it still works.
Basicly if you login with a nickname that hasnt been used before it gets automaticly created (and bound to your serial, i guess).
Nickname cant be longer than 12 characters and cant start with a number. Also password has to be exactly 8 characters long afaik.
If they'd just put those instructions in HTML format on the new account button link, that would save people a lot of trouble...
