USA's acronym for the Order of Operations is PEMDAS - Parentheses Exponents Multiplication/Division Addition/Subtraction. Often remembered by the mnemonic of "Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally".
Anyway, onto the actual problem:
Assuming you didn't leave out any parentheses, you started with:
y = bare X bare + bare - barebare
You then get:
y = bare2 + bare - barebare
Then do a little distribution...
y = bare(bare + 1 - 1bare)
and since 1 to the power of anything is 1,
y = bare(bare + 1 - 1)
So, unless I'm remembering my algebra wrong (it has been around 10 years...), you get:
y = bare2
