I have not been practicing religion of any sort the last year, but the version I have used is New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures (NWT).
I find the choice of what Bible translation important because the misunderstanding one line of text can cause.
Luke 23:43,
American KJV reads, "And Jesus said to him, Truly I say to you, To day shall you be with me in paradise."
NWT reads, "And he said to him: "Truly I tell you today, You will be with me in Paradise." "
Anybody notice the difference in how those two examples read?
The difference is in the placement of the commas, and how they cause a pause in the words.
"Truly I tell you , today , you will be will me in paradise."
Now the context is Jesus says this to the repentant sinner next to him when he is dying.
If you use the pink comma to read the text it looks as if Jesus was saying they will be in paradise later that day.
If you use the green comma to read the text it looks as if Jesus was saying they will be in paradise at a later time, not limited to that day.
Most Bibles will read with the comma before "today", like the pink one. That however does not coincide with later sayings of The Bible and Jesus.
According to the story Jesus was in the tomb for 3 days, then he was resurrected, and then he walked the earth for 40 days before ascending to the Father.
According to American KJV John 20:17 reads, "Jesus said to her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brothers, and say to them, I ascend to my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God."
So if Jesus did not ascend to the Father for 43 days after his death, he could not have meant that they would be in paradise that day.
Little things like the placement of one comma can completely make or break an idea/belief.
