of course, lets not even begin to mention the miniscule performance difference offered by AGP 8X:

[H] - http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=MzkyLDY=
"So, where are we at? Well, overall the differences in performance between AGP 4X and AGP 8X were roughly a few frames at most faster. Now, I do have to say it actually was faster in each resolution by having AGP 8X. It wasn’t noticeably faster by any means, but it was "benchmarkably" faster, which is certainly what some folks want."

AGP is going away. This time next year, we will all be talking about how great our PCI Express boards are, and how they have 16x the bandwidth of AGP 8X, but how we still don't have cards to take advantage of it. With the exception of the early versions of the Radeon 9700 Pro, all 8X capable cards are fully compatible with AGP 4X slots.

-------

Leave your AGP Aperture set to 128MB. Once you hit 64MB, you pretty much flatline in performance from there to 256.

Yes, very helpful post.

RenX, if you're buying a new card and dont have alot of money to spend, check out some forums like the [H] and AT FS/T forums. Several people there are usually getting rid of 4600's and 9700Pros for fairly cheap. Check in your country for someone selling refurbished video cards like newegg does. I can get a 9600Pro refurb from newegg for 130 USD. Normally, it retails for 200. I can get a 4600 for as cheap as 140.

--------

IceSword, check to make sure AGP 4X is enabled in your BIOS also. Most are set to 2X speed by default, which is noticably slower than 4X.

If you just bought it and installed it from a nVidia card, odds are a format and reinstall would be best. nVidia drivers are really hard to totally get rid of.

I don't know if its a IQ setting problem. Odds are, you probably don't know how to change the AA/AF level yet. But on my computer, I can run @ 2XAA/16XAF @ 800x600 on a Athlon 1.4 w/9500Pro (9500's are a tad faster than 9600's too), and maintain a framerate of 40-70fps. Playable and looks good.
