Ok, prepare to be confused.
There's two types of i7's: the 9xx Series, and the 8xx series. If you want to use a 9xx, like a i7 920/930, then the motherboard that goes with it is an X58.
i7 8xx CPU's, and i5's, and i3's use the P55/H55 motherboards.
If you just want to play games, then the best CPU is the i5 750. It's very fast, uses less power than the i7 920, and generates way less heat. Good P55 chipsets are cheaper than X58's, and the DDR3 Dual Channel memory for an i5 is cheaper too.
i5's like the 660 are dual cores; they're really fast at stock, and can get huge overclocks.
To answer your question, the i5-750 is faster than the Phenom 955/965. The i5-750 also overclocks much more, if that's something you're interested in. But, if you're just playing games, it's not a big deal.
