We invented it. It's called football. American football is called 'American football, not 'football'. Why Americans thought they could just call it football even though that's actually a totally different game, I have no idea.
It's a bit like calling a game with only Two countries involved the 'World Series', and it's victors 'World Champions'. No one would be arrogant enough to do that... Oh, wait...
