What he meant was installing w7; with keeping all your info on your drive (aka upgrading) can create problems. But a fresh install of w7 will be fine, however a fresh install will involve erasing your hard drive contents.

An external hd, especially a small one. Isn't very expensive at all, for that matter buy a cheap internal, hook it up and use that as a constant running hard drive, and your current one just for your OS or vise versa. That way you wont need to worry about switching your OS as often as you change your socks Big Ups
