You can get a decent computer for $600 - $1000

I got 650 watt modular psu

2 sticks of 1gb DDR2 800

a zalman cpu heat sink with smart fan control

3 hard drives

A biostar t force amd motherboard

AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ 3.2GHz

GeForce 9800 GTX+ 512MB

Got it all around for $600 - $700 and i can run every new game on high it might be outdated soon but sure runs fast. Cpu are really cheap right now 2.

If you want a really good pc i would go wait a little bit longer until the next generation comes out.
