My friend, Dima, is Russian Orthodox, and you know what he HAS to give up for Lent? He doesn't get to choose what he gives up at all.
He gives up:
- TV (but for Documentaries)
- Dairy and meat (essentially turns vegan)
- Computer Games of all sorts
- and finally, music (but for Russian Church Choir)
And he has to do this for periods of 3 weeks to sometimes 3 months, and he usually has to do it multiple times a year, which leaves it at 1/3 to half the year being on Lent.
Nowadays I don't even find the Lent that most people follow even remotely religious. So I don't do it at all.
