Yeah, I decided to quote it from the origional guy who posted it instead of summarizing it myself
Someone should make a .GIF out of that
|
...or preferably an animated PNG
|
what colors can those hold?
|
PNG supports 1, 8, 16, 24 and 32-bit colour while GIF only supports 8-bit plus 1-bit transparency.
Bit depth: Colours
1 : 2 (either transparent or not transparent for 1-bit transparency)
8 : 256 (GIF maximum)
16 : 65,536
24 : 16,777,216 (maximum viewable on normal monitor)
32 : 24 bit colour + 8-bit transparency = best image quality visible on your monitor
The main reasons to use PNG and not GIF is not because of the colour-count but because PNG is smaller than GIF and is supporting a free-image format compared to a proprietary one.
