Go with the Intel Core i7 @ 2.66. Cheapest of the new batch, and with proper cooling, you can overclock the crap out of it.
Of course, with that, you will need a new mobo that supports the LGA 1366 socket type for the i7.
Then you'll need some DDR3 RAM (running at a voltage less than 1.65 V), in sets of 3 for that processor.
Lol, I just looked all this stuff up the other day. Anyway, basically, if you're going to put that much money into a PC, you might as well go all out and build for the future so that you won't have to upgrade for years, and so that you will be prepared for when the software finally supports the new hardware technology.
Decide whether you want to go Intel or AMD. I did some research for the Intel i7, and picked out some parts that would go well together, as a sort of fantasy wish list for myself. Here they are:
-Processor
-Mobo
-RAM
-Then get yourself a badass gfx card (or 2 of em, why not). In terms of power and performance, I've currently got a Nvidia 9800 GTX+, and I have not yet found a game (cept Crysis, which is poopy anyway) that I can't run on full 1680x1050 res, full detail, at least 4xAA with over 30-40 fps. Therefore, a GTX 280 would EPICLY RAPE games, but as others have mentioned the ATI 4870 might also do the trick.
-Find yourself a 64 bit OS to support all that RAM.
-You could mess with RAID, or just go buy a 1.5 TB hdd, they're cheap enough.
-And the case. I got myself a full tower ATX, this one, and despite the price, I couldn't be happier. It's huge, it's solid, it's got 5 fans, and is relatively easy to get hardware into.
-And with all this hardware, find yourself a huge power supply. You might not need it, but to be on the safe side, 750 watt or higher.
-Cooling may be an issue, like I said, I've got 5 fans, and my CPU is idling at 30 C. Liquid cooling is a good option since you plan on overclocking. If I liquid cooled, I could idle at less than 20 C.
That's about it. Have fun building. Like I said, plan for the future, since you plan on spending the money.
Also, I know I linked to Newegg, and I dunno what their deal with shipping to UK is, but those parts are just examples that I'm sure you could find elsewhere.
