Here's a thought: Maybe we could stop expecting the police to prevent crime, and start treating them as the purely reactionary force they are supposed to be(which is, coincidentally, the only role they are able to perform reliably)? Then we could stop putting ludicrous restrictions on private citizens owning weapons, and allow the law-abiding population to provide its own deterrent to crime! Just thinkin' out loud here. Maybe we could get really radical and pass laws preventing stupid lawsuits- then people wouldn't be so afraid to report or intervene in crimes, which could very possibly result in fewer criminals getting away! I should write some of this down; it'd make a great novel.

Emphasis on the if. Fear of immediate consequences deters crime. The police do not and cannot offer immediate consequences.
*edit: Traffic stops are just bad news. I'd love to see an increase in the amount of time officers spend training on night stops. Officers should also be required to double up at night. Yes, that reduces the number of units available for enforcement, but it's a hell of a lot safer than sending them out alone. I'd sooner see fewer fatalities than an increase in the number of people nailed for speeding or any other violation.

Wait, a REACTIONARY force? You mean, the government should stick to the idea that all people are innocent until proven guilty? That's a fucking crazy idea. You're one Hell of a radical. That would mean people would have more liberty, and that's bad news for the government.
