Comments of race will never go away until we all mix together some time in the future. And even this will not stop bigoted opinions of the differences of peoples. Rome, for example had a large slave class in many ways like our own in the 19th century, but there were a large amount of differences, the main being that slaves were not slaves based on race but on other factors, mainly wars and poverty. That being said the main prejudices that would arise in a culture like this would be based on culture and creed, not strictly on race. All people could become Roman citizens if they acted....Roman(religion, dress, etc.) I think this came about because of the position of the Roman state to other different races(Africa and Asia Minor), something very similar to our own state(the U.S.) but with very different results.

I agree there exists a double standard in our society when referring to black and white relations. For example on this forum, when you try to post the dreaded "N" word, it replaces it with "mean black person", but when you try to post "cracker" it lets it through, also the trend of calling blacks "African American" when referring to their race...yet whites are called "white" instead of "European American" (I actually prefer white and black...very simple, I am just putting the example forward).

We as a society will not get over the differences in our race if we keep "pouring salt on the wound" so to speak, by placing people of different races into stereotypical groups. Referring to a "Black" or "White" person should mean absolutely nothing other than their skin tone. It should not reflect their character or their culture. Treating people as individuals instead of groups will very much hamper the ignorance that has crept into the minds of Americans of all ethnicities.
