They're onto something with the 'cartoon' look. You only need to see EA aping the idea with Battlefield Heroes to get the idea that the boys and girls at Valve had a concept that would appeal to many people.
Plus, these days, games like Crysis are "Serious Business" , so it's nice to play a game that's a bit lighter, and appeals to people like me, that don't play too many games.
