Give me a cent every time someone exploits this to repair their vehicle while driving it, and I'd be rich.
I also believe (without any knowledge of renegades inner workings) that it is the client not receiving the information that they are in a vehicle. The server is simply telling them the coords of the tank, and the changes to those coords depending on the user WASD input. On the client the vehicle and the char are stuck in each other so they can't move, and so you "lag" along as the server is attempting to "correct" your position.
