I don't particularly care for Harry Potter; it's way below my reading level and I'm far more into Sci-Fi settings anyway.

There's a line, however, between not reading a book for a good reason (i.e. it doesn't interest you) and not reading it for a stupid, ignorant reason (i.e. the book is evil and people who read it also eat babies). Then there's another line beyond that, where personal preference becomes policy- and that line should never, ever be crossed.

I've run across crap like this before- more or less exactly like this; one of my teachers back in middle school forbade students from using Harry potter for book reports because of its references to 'witchcraft' and magic. It wasn't such a big deal for me, since I wasn't into the book, but the whole concept of being allowed to ban a book because you don't agree with its contents is dangerous and stupid. Furthermore, Harry Potter hardly presents a realistic view of anything- witchcraft, real life Wicca, has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with brewing potions or flying on brooms. Nevertheless, you'll find that the same folks who'll say you can't read Harry Potter will also restrict access to books about alternate religions, which drives straight past banning a novel and straight into thought control.

You were absolutely right to be pissed off at your parents and teachers; what they did was wrong. You have a right to read whatever you desire, no matter how much others may disagree with it. Reading a book- any book, from the Bible to the Anarchist's Cookbook- does not violate the rights of any other human being.
