We were actually talking about this during a small discussion in the Philosophy department (during breaks many students go to the department office to chat about whatever happens to come up).

This one guy either knows directly or "knows someone who knows someone" (yes, this can be disputed, but the guy has no reason to make this up in regards to the context the discussion took)who has the following case:

This individual has a treatable disease which leaves her mentally handicapped to the point of simply being unable to work as a result. It is life-threatening over the long run, but she can not afford the surgery as she is unable to work. Now, I was told that in America, if there is an immediate life-threatening situation, doctors will operate without first getting paid. However, by the time this disease becomes life-threatening, she is in a state where it is far too risky to operate anyway. When she recovers to a point where she CAN be operated on, it is no longer life-threatening and so they won't operate.
