We installed a regular copy of Xp Proffesional without SP2.

Install Windows XP SP2. You should be able to obtain the remaining space via Diskmanagement.

Unless you have a PC with less then a Pentium 4/ Atlhon XP I doubt it's the motherboard being not able to have the 250GB.
