I used spinrite to fix my 40GB hdd once, some files needed to get into windows were corrupt, so I was pretty screwed at the time. I managed to fix it all using the program and my windows cd. I wouldn't think memtest takes very long, perhaps you can find the amount of passes somewhere on the web or in the manual, if there is one.
