If you have Re-formated your hard disk using the same file system (NTFS or FAT) then you may still be in luck. Plug an additional drive into your PC (other than your C:) and then install a program that allows the scanning of your drive for old data. I may be able to find the program that was in one of my PC mags later.
Basically unless you filled every sector of your drive with 0's, which would take days then you can recover the data using a program. I mamanged to save 4 GB of data on my formatted HDD before. It's a similar process to what the FBI use to scan hard drives that have been taken as evidence. Even if they have been formatted then thay can still recover the data. Norton probably offer a program for doing this but I may be able to find you that freeware one I had on a PC mag CD somewhere.
It's a time consuming process (a few hours) but it worked for me and I saved a years worth of work I had on my PC. Now I backup everything onto CD every so often.
