Wouldnt that make his survival rate drop dramatically? I always heard if something large penetrates the skin more than 3 inches that leaving it in will stop the bleeding until you can get surgery.

I know it was poisonous, but damn.

I was thinking the same thing. Think of it as taking a jug of water and shoving a pencil through it. The jug won't lose as much water with the pencil still in it, as it fills the hole it made in the jug. When you pull the pencil out, there's nothing to close the gap that the pencil has made.

I can imagine wanting to pull out a poisonous barb, but most sting ray attacks are not lethal. I'm thinking that he accidentally sealed his fate when he removed the barb.
