Probably not. There are several string theories, each claiming strings operate a different way. To solve the dilemma (since all seemed correct), M-Theory was formed by claiming all existing string theories were just parts of a larger picture. That introduced the 11th dimension which deals in string 'depth' or something... Been a while since I read over the basics of M-Theory.
