Technically, the winnings are part of your income. Which, as far as I know, includes any earnings, whether it be from manual labor or chance. Therefore, you're taxed on the income. To be honest, I think taking taxes out of money you DIDN'T earn would be more reasonable than taking taxes out of money you DID earn. It would seem more fair, since you actually earned your wages. Then again, game show winnings are a fairly new idea, so the idea of it being taxed seems weird, but I still think that's more reasonable than money you earned.
Edit: I'm sure many will argue that the winners did technically "earn" it because they did have to put something in to get the return. However, in this case, I mean "earn" as in working for a job and earning your money that way rather than a one-time lottery or game show winning.
