Heh, just a bit of hypothesized info regarding that particular trait of them.

I don't have time to search for the link, but:

Science believes this is because of the continents having been one large mass. The lemmings are following an inherent need to travel to a certain place. The only problem is that this place is now under water or across it. The lemmings still follow that path, regardless of how the land has changed.
