There is also a "trick" you and your buddies can do in order to play together.
1. Your buddy leaves the game
2. You immediately join the game when he leaves, and you get his slot.
3. Your buddy rejoins, and he will be on the same team (whenever you leave and rejoin you always get same team)

That only works under certain situations. When you join, if the other team either has fewer players or (if the teams are even) the other team has fewer points, you will end up on the other team.
