What I'm trying to say is that when you hit control alt delete it is working but you can't see it. It won't do anything to make your screen look normal again until you've done what i said (maybe it doesn't work for non-XP if you are) Each and every time I get a black screen and I do that it works. I'd rather not guess where the exit button is when all i'd do is hit
1. ctrl alt del
2. del
3. enter
so unless you've already tried that then I'm sorry. It's not the same as hitting ctrl alt del because that never worked for me.
Either way the best way to preventing this is just remember to hit escape if it seems it's going to go into black screen.
