Computer "nerds" tend to use technical terms but computer nerds are both people that know a lot about computers and people that probably use their computer too much. I'd have to say normal people, as you put it, use normal terms. "Texture" is the normal term for a model's texture, whilst "skin" is a term coined by those who download/trade textures and texture artists who perhaps need a quick way of speaking to each other about textures.
In other words; the word is fake in its context, picked up like a fashion trend and used to death by people who choose not to use the correct terms then get all mad and hissy when "normal people" try to correct them.

But yes, you both have a point....but for people like me who use the term "skin" I don't care it's not the correct one....most people -"normal" included- know what I mean. But I won't have a hissy fit because I'm wrong or because I was corrected in my word usage, because that is what makes me unique. (Also possibly see annoying....but I can live with that!)
