Hehe - that's pretty common, too. I usually start as a tech and tell people i'm laying mines, too. It's working more and more now, but every once in a while...

Some maps have diff strats - like hourglass - make sure the advanced guard tower is well mined because you'll often have one guy coming in followed by another. 10 mines inside the door does the trick and kept me alive and repairing that tower 3 times yesterday. hehe
