Windows has power management in the control panel which if your hardware supports it will turn the system off after a set time. Worsk halfway decent for a feature built in to windows.

If you can get into your motherboard bios you can sometimes set automated start up and shut off. I love having my computer humming 15 minutes before I get up in the morning.

starting from windows 98 you can you task scheduler to perform day to day tasks when you are away from you computer.

e.g. sya you want to run scan disk every night at 3:00 you can schedule that task.

Similiarly you can schedule a system shutdown every night aslo

look in control panel for it.
