Correct, but it's an option in the installation program, it's not an essential component. Chances are he installed the game with the idea that he wanted to use GameSpy, so chose not to install WOL.
On the other hand, he could just be bullshitting and has a cracked/warez version of the game...

somewhere in the EA site can you get new serials for a game but you have to make a picture of your cd and things
when your lucky you get a new serial
it worked for me

I have the same problem, I had to reformat my computer, but my brother broke my Data disc for Renegade, so I couldn't reinstall it. But I could still install RenAlert, just not connect to WOL. But there is a solution:

C:\Westwood\RenAlert\Game.exe +connect 69.93.110.18:7000 +netplayername "yourname"
Make sure the "" marks are there. This is seperate from WOL, so it won't count toward you rank, or at least i don't think it will. From in-game, it will look like you're playing on GameSpy, but with a lot less lag.
Anyway, if all is right, when you click on that icon it will take you directly to n00bsvr03.

Posted by Renx, it direct connects you to n00bserv03. Just do that till you get new Serial/Renegade CD.
