I really like the point of view on this, expressed by the screenwriters.

"A citizen is someone who makes the survival of the human race, his PERSONAL responsibility."

I believe that that is the core issue of what makes a U.S. Soldier/Sailor different than a pacifist. Taking personal responsibility for what happens in the environment he lives in, and the world his children live in.
