I have been trying (without success) to find an article I read a while back.

Basically the article stated that in future there is likely to be a three way fight between Solaris, Windows and Linux.
Some other OS's may survive, but they won't have anywhere near the user base of these three.

I kind of agree with that article with the reservation that I am not sure how some of the OS'es on newer devices will pan out, (Mobile phones, PDA and such).

Personally I see the strengths of these three being:

Solaris: Good on high end Sun and Fujitsu hardware.
Linux: Cheap/Free and reliable server side OS.
Windows: Well known desktop OS.

I use all three OS'es almost every weekday and I like all of them.

I don't see any new OS'es coming into any of these markets for these reasons:

In order to compete at the high end server market you need a lot of money to build hardware and develop an OS there just aren't that many companies that have the resources/desire to do it.

For a low end server, it is difficult to find flaws in Linux and its really difficult to beat the price. Smile

For the desktop, I just don't think MS will let anyone else into the market.
I think they will do anything they can to stop someone getting a foothold.
