Hello all, I am going to get a new computer next month, and I got a suggestion from my Dad to get a rack mounted server, as he works with them for a living, and could install a graphics card, etc. I was looking through Compaq's servers yesterday, noticed that I could get a system with 4 gigs of memory, a 200 gig hard drive, 2 USB ports, mouse/keyboard hookups, 2 PCI slots, a monitor hookup, and a CD rom drive, for around $3,000. Unfortunately for me, it seems like the only Operating systems offered on these things are windows server and linux, keeping me from running any games on them. My question is, would it be possible to somehow install windows XP onto one of these servers, fit a graphics card into it somehow, get a USB sound card, and have the fastest gaming computer on planet earth?
Just curious...There's gotta be a catch.

that server probably doens't even have an AGP slot, most rack server are meant to crunch numbers and process task, their main asset is ram and cpu speed.
You would be much better getting a computer form alienware.com or hypersonic-pc.com then trying to fix up a computer.

That rackmount is built to be a server, not a gaming machine. Even if you could get XP on there and get a good graphics card, it would still not perform as great as an average gaming machine.
But if you are thinking of spending $3000, then just get an alienware or something. You can host servers etc on it, and you can use it for serious gaming.

Another good idea is to get a barebones model and do the rest. That is, if you want to go through the task of doing so, even though it isn't that hard.

Windows 2000 server runs renegade fine, as previously mentioned the problem is gonna be the graphics card and memory access.
Servers are not designed for gaming and games are not (usually) designed for servers (they don't use the extra processors and are not optimized for Xeon's).

I'm building a system for someone at the moment, a standard home PC, but they wanted me to max the board out with RAM. I said I could do it for £200 for 4 512MB DIMMS, they originally wanted the full 3GB, which costs around £800 (2x 512, 2x 1GB) due to the silly price of a 1GB DIMM at the moment.

They are a photographer and use a lot of photoshop features. Genrally working with huge images like up to 15 megapixel in uncompressed TIFF format so you need a lot of RAM to be handling them files.

Dunno. But 4Ghz has been around since the P4 3.06 chip. If you own a Prometia cooling system then you can overclock it to 4Ghz. The Prometia system cools the CPU down to around -30 C and allows you to overclock it if you have right hardware.
