Okay, i suspect my newbie dad has gone and installed something bad from the internet onto his computer.

166mhz CPU
96MB ram
Windows 2000

The program "msnarrator.exe" is found in the C:\windows directory, and is 10kb in size. The narrator is running (seen in the ctrl+alt+del process list and no windows are visible for it). If you open an internet explorer window, then navigate to any website, after 5 seconds or so the window will close itself.

Now this only happens whilst this exe is running, so i ended the process, and you can navigate to your sites again. But after a click on a link, the EXE will be running again, then your window will close.

SO, my next step was to end the process AND delete the exe itself from the hard disk. I thought this would solve the problem, but once you click on a link again, the program is not only back, but it's CREATED the file again on the hard disk.

One thing i should also add is that my dad's never used the narrator once as far as i know, never even knew it existed, just weird this all started yesterday.

Any help would be great to sort this out.
If you need more info, just ask.
Thanks.

Oh man, viruses/spyware stink

As far as help, have you been able to identify what the file(s) name(s) is/are? If so, run a search through your computer with the file name, then delete those files. If not, run a search on google. I bet someone has had the same problem and figured out how to fix it.

Search for the file name again, there should be two files, the .exe and a .pf file. delete both

In the end it doesn't matter if you are who you say you are. You will still mean nothing to me.

Something like that happened to me before, but it was http://www.lop.com and it completly hijacks your internet explorer. I did everything to get around it but it re-spawns each time you reboot, in the end I booted into safe mode and killed the thing with a program.

msnarrator sounds like the narrator program that comes in Windows XP (maybe also 2000?), which reads out what you click on. As Dante said, it would be found under accessability options, or if not it would be listed on the windows components under add/remove programs.

If it was windows narrator then you should be able to disable it easily though so it may be something else.

I really doubt this has anything to do with the Windows Narrator. Though i'm not sure, the windows XP narrator is "narrator.exe".

I've already been through all the accessibility options and nothing is unusual. I've also been in the add/remove screen and removed some shite that my dad had installed.

I've told him like 100 times NOT to install stuff from the internet, but there were plenty of dialers and crap like that. Also those "oooh flashing cursors and smilies" things.

Anyway, after removing plenty of software the problem is still there. I'll check again in the morning, as the computer is upstairs where they're sleeping right now.
