Yah thats a good thought...colleges always seem to have a lot of pretty toys...just be sure to ask before you borrow, I'm sure the professors wouldn't much care to let you run some stuff off of their machine, as long as you pay for the materials you use in it...

Hehe
If you can make me a foam version of an emblem, I'll make you a cast aluminum version of it, if you polish that sucker up real nice and clearcoat it to protect it from scratches, she'll shine like crazy
I'm not gonna make one right away though, takes too much time, and I have a performance engine I'm devoting my time and money into, lol

Well, actually, the machine works kind of like this [please note: this is only to the best of my understanding, and I might be wrong]: You put a big block of foam or metal into the machine, and the machine proceeds to cut into the block with blades and such until it turns the block of foam/metal into the on the computer. As an alternative, I think I have heard of CAD machines where it injects plastic into a custom mold to make the 3D .

about the CAD thing..
I've used CAD at a job once, basicly it was for cardboard cut-outs.
You know the big cardboard cut outs you see at the movies, like the big HULK sign, well i made a few of those while i was in England.
Basicly you just mark off all the fold points and set up all the measurements. Then send it to the big ass machine (was about 2 and a half meters wide, maybe more and about 2 meters long.) and then you would see this kinda pen-knife tool skim all over the big piece of cardboard, putting crease's, cut parts off and cut out the pieces in the middle and such.
Then just basicly took it out brought it over to the laminator, put the big image already cut to size on top of the cardboard, put it through the laminator.
Then just built it and voila a nice big ass cardboard cutout for the movies!!
Well that was one of my past jobs, that was cool. Great money also!

we have 3 cnc routers at work, and 3 cutters, they are amazing to watch.
each one cost oh about... $400,000, so i seriously doubt you will be going to your local rental places and picking one up for about $25 an hour, oh, they also weigh close to a ton.

Yeah they are preety exepensive but indeed they are great to watch....
I love the air suction on the machines that keep the card from moving, i wish i could reverse it and use it as a VERY expensive air hockey table, lol!
What does your work use em' for Dante?
